The U.S. Congress is getting involved in #FreeBritney movement
The joint initiative of Democrats and Republicans for the new law was prompted by the case of Britney Spears.
Britney Spears, in her recent testimony in court, finally revealed the details of the restrictive conservatorship under which she has lived for 13 years, but she also shed light on the problematic laws that are of such an arrangement, in which a person can be declared incapable of independent living, but capable of working and the whole profit goes to the person's caregivers.
Britney seems to have done the seemingly impossible and united Republicans and Democrats in efforts to introduce a new law that would make custody cases like Britney’s more transparent and prevent possible fraud.
The FREE (Freedom and Right to Emancipation from Exploitation) bill was passed by Democratic MP Charlie Crist and Republican Nancy Mace, with the goal of giving custodians the right to ask the court to change assigned custodians and have state-level finance overseers guardians and ensure that there is no conflict of interest. The law would also mean keeping records at the state level of how many custody cases there are, and it is estimated that there are currently over a million adults in the United States in similar restrictive custody conditions, CNN reports.
Whether the media attention attracted by this case, and the support of fans and numerous celebs will help Britney's desire to live the way she wants and finally be free from custody, but also the pomp she has been causing for decades, we will see with the continuation of the trial. But her story seems to have revealed a much deeper problem in which her case, unfortunately, is not alone.
