Charlize Theron, 45, is very dedicated to raising her daughter, whom she adopted after becoming aware of how many abandoned children there were, and she also experienced great trauma as a child.

The South African, who was granted U.S. citizenship in 2007, had a difficult childhood growing up on a farm near Johannesburg. Namely, on June 21, 1991, her alcoholic father Charles threatened her and her mother Gerda while under the influence of alcohol. He was violent and wanted to shoot them, and Charlize’s mother took her gun and killed him to save their lives. Police characterized it as self-defense and there were no legal consequences for Gerda.
