An action-thriller about two ordinary people: " Boat story"
Brothers Harry and Jack Williams became famous as producers of the successful series "Fleabag", but their latest production "Boat Story" on the BBC is more similar to another series, such as "Fargo" in terms of narrative form and use of dark humor. It mixes drama with undertones of dark humor very close to the Coen brothers, through a rather unusual narrative with a narrator's presentation of the story.
What can we expect?
The story begins when Janet Campbell (Daisy Haggard), a woman who had an accident at work, and Samuel Wells (Patterson Joseph), who arrived on the coast of northern England to "heal" his marriage, meet on the beach while walking their dogs. When one of the animals returns with a bloody mouth, they both discover that there is a stranded boat with several brutally murdered bodies and a shipment of cocaine. The rest of the series brings consequences to certain decisions, such as Janet and Samuel deciding to take cocaine and try to sell it. The drugs are part of a shipment made by a cartel led by a French gangster called the Tailor (Tceki Kario) who wants to find out where the shipment went.
The most interesting thing is the way the Williams brothers use the main narrative resources of this type of thriller to mix them up, creating a different way of telling the plot, such as one episode opening in the form of a musical, while another begins with black and white images in the form of film noir, etc. This narrative game may seem like it has too many elements, but it all ties together in the end with efficiency and a good sense of humor, while for some viewers it may be too violent to see crushed hands and severed tongues. The characters of the main antagonists are written in a realistic way, which makes them fragile, and this is also the case with the Tailor, who, when he arrives in the city, falls in love with Pet (Joanna Scanlan). While Cario has quite a bit of fun playing the romantic villain, the show has the virtue of having Haggard in the lead role, an actress with great comedic talent. She provides all the emotional punch the show needs with a little humor.
This metascenic game provides a lot of viewing pleasure because in its approach it provides something different and interesting and something that breaks the rules.
