Beyoncé as a contemporary Audrey Hepburn
In a new campaign for Tiffany & Co., the singer appears with her husband Jay Z and wears (among others) the famous yellow diamond
The Carters have collaborated many times in the studio and on stage, but for the first time, they appeared together in an advertising campaign, ‘About Love’, for Tiffany & Co. In photos posted on social media, we see them at the piano and in front of Jean-Michel Basquiat's painting 'Equals Pi'. Image, which will be on display in Tiffany & Co. shops on Fifth Avenu, is the only reference to the cult ‘Tiffany blue’ color and one of the symbols of the new notion of luxury embodied by this jeweler’s house.
But the painting is not the main star of the photos. These are, of course, Bey and Jay and the famous yellow diamond that only three women wore before Beyoncé. A yellow diamond of as much as 287.4 carats was mined in 1877 in South Africa, and 128.5 carats have been processed. It was first worn by Mary Whitehouse at the Tiffany Ball in 1957, and got famous in 1961 thanks to Audrey Hepburn with the film ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’.
Her look at the time set the standard for any future wear of this amazing diamond, so Lady Gaga wore a diamond necklace with a black dress by Brandon Maxwell and a high bun for the 2019 Oscars, paying homage to Audrey.
Beyoncé’s look is a slightly more contemporary interpretation of Holly Golightly: a tight black dress with a bare back, see-through black gloves, and a slightly more disheveled high bun, and Beyoncé took a step further while referencing the movie and sang ‘Moon River’ at the piano while Jay-Z filmed her. We will find out what he recorded and how 'Moon River' sounds when performed by Bey on September 2 when the campaign is fully announced.
