Childish Gambino gets sued!
A lawsuit came for Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino for his 2018 hit song “This Is America”.
Recently a rapper called Kidd Wes filed a lawsuit against Donald Glower due to the similarities of his own song “Made in America” which he released 2 years prior to “This Is America” by Glover.
Kidd is suing Glover for copyright infringement, and the documents state that Donald’s song has similar “flow” and, “the lyrical theme, content, and structure of the identically-performed choruses.”
Kidd’s lawyers have also stated that the songs are so similar that it couldn’t have been an accident.
The lawsuit also refers to Dr. Brent Swanson, a musicologist at the University of Miami who is labeled as an evidentiary witness.
The professor supported Kidd by writing that there are distinct similarities in melodic contour, rhythmic triplet flow in each performance, and the lines ‘Made in America’ and ‘This is America’ line up nearly perfectly in time despite being different tempos,” and he also said that both songs contain rhythmic utterances.
A statement by Kidd Wes was also included in the lawsuit in which he said that he isn’t doing this for money, however, in the off chance he wins, he would get millions of dollars.
He further explained how he doesn’t want money; he just wants respect for independent artists. He continued saying that he has a bunch of friends who experienced the same but were prevented by their fear to do anything only because they were going up against a bigger name. Kidd also said that he wants this to be a start of a new era.
He concluded the statement by saying that creativity is what makes the industry and that it should all be about artists respecting each other’s art.
