Excellent start for "Wonka" with Timothée Chalamet!
For its first weekend, it earned over $151 million worldwide!
The fantastic musical "Wonka" arrived in cinemas all over the world last weekend and achieved a sweet triumph, taking first place in the ratings in most countries.
The story of an eccentric chocolate maker, played by Timothée Chalamet, grossed an excellent $39 million in North America and over $112 million in the rest of the world – a total of over $151 million for the opening weekend of this long-awaited new adaptation.
In the Warner Bros. Studio, they were hoping for such a start, and the expectation was that the film would attract enough viewers during the holidays to make "Wonka" more than profitable considering the budget of about 125 million dollars, which does not include marketing costs.
It is certainly in favor of the excellent ratings of critics who gave it 83% on the Rotten Tomatoes portal, and the American CinemaScore reports that it received an A- rating from the audience. When we look at the coming weekends, "Wonka" doesn't even have much competition. There are the animated "Ducks" by Universal and Illumination, the musical adaptation and a remake of "The Color Purple" also by Warner Bros., and DC's "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom", which hits theaters worldwide this Thursday.
With the film "Wonka", Timothée Chalamet only confirms his star status, and he is the third actor to embody the character created by Roald Dahl. Gene Wilder played him fantastically in 1971 in the family musical comedy "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", and Johnny Depp was no worse in 2005 in the remake.
"Wonka" is directed by Paul King and is a prequel that deals with the early days of Willy Wonka (how Willy became Wonka) and is set long before poor Charlie finds the golden ticket to tour the famous chocolate factory. Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key and Hugh Grant star alongside Chalamet.
