GoFundMe shuts down $1M Amber Heard fundraiser

GOFUNDME has stopped raising funds that should help Amber Heard pay Johnny Depp part of the money she owes him after a defamation trial.

A jury in Fairfax, Virginia, decided this week that Depp should receive more than $ 10 million in damages after Heard wrote an article describing herself as a victim of abuse. Heard herself should receive $ 2 million in damages for Depp's former attorney's comments, meaning she owes her ex-husband a total of $ 8.35 million. Following the verdict, a fundraising campaign called Justice for Amber Heard was launched on GoFundMe.

The action on GoFundMe was aimed at raising a million dollars and claimed that it wanted to help Amber pay Depp what she now owes him by the verdict. "We believe Amber and social media have protected the abuser. The punishment is greater than what she has. It is so sad that he managed to get away with the abuse. The verdict supports that abuse. If you can, please help her. She will have direct access to the money. Her lawyers have been notified," the description of the action said before it was shut down.

It is not clear exactly how long the fundraising campaign lasted, but it closed after GoFundMe determined that neither Heard nor anyone on her team had created the site. A spokesman for the fundraising site told TMZ that they managed to stop the action before a significant amount of money was raised.

Depp and Heard's relationship began more than a decade ago and eventually turned into what appeared to be a toxic marriage. The couple divorced in 2016 but continued to fight in court over an article Heard wrote for the Washington Post in 2018, in which she described surviving domestic violence - not mentioning Depp by name.

Depp sued her for $ 50 million in damages and denies that he was ever physically violent towards Amber. Amber sued Depp for 100 million dollars and claimed that she was violent with Depp only in self-defense or in defense of her younger sister. As the case unfolded, social media became full of audio recordings, evidence, and recordings from the courtroom. Depp spent four days testifying.
