Laine Hardy, the winner of the 17th season of "American Idol", was arrested on Friday and accused of placing an eavesdropping device in his ex-girlfriend's bedroom.
A Louisiana police spokesman confirmed that Hardy is in "East Baton Rouge" jail for violating Louisiana law Article 15: 1303 - interception and detection of wired, electronic, or oral communication.
Hardy's lawyer confirmed in a statement that he received a warrant for his arrest and that he was and will continue to cooperate fully with the Louisiana Police Department on this issue. “Due to the public nature of Mr. Hardy's profession, we are looking for privacy at the moment” - the lawyer added.
According to the EW portal, the police arrived in the bedroom of Hardy's ex-girlfriend on April 7, after the victim and her roommate found the device under her futon. The victim initially mixed it with a phone charger, but a Google search determined that it was a VR-500 voice recorder.
Examining files downloaded from the recording device, authorities said they could hear what they considered Hardy's voice as the device was delivered to the victim's room. Hardy's name was also mentioned in the conversations. The warrant was then approved on April 27.
The victim also stated, as documented, that the musician had previously recorded her in another way and allegedly admitted that he planted a "bug" in her dormitory, which he later rejected.
Hardy first revealed that he received an order from the Police Administration in a statement published on social networks on Thursday night, although he only quoted unspecified "accusations" made against him. He said that he "fully cooperated" with the authorities.
“I understand that my career has pushed me into the public spotlight, and I accept it with all my heart because my whole world belongs to my music and my fans. However, due to the sensitive nature of this claim, I humbly seek privacy at this time. I extremely respect the law and I will help in their investigation if necessary” - Hardy wrote.
