Rumors of a 14-inch iPad are back
With the release of the first iPad twelve years ago, Apple launched into a market that was mostly unknown at the time: tablets. Will it be a success or a flop? Now, it may appear that the option was obvious, but there were no guarantees either way.
Shortly after its release, it became evident that the movement had been a success; other manufacturers entered the market, and demand for tablets of all sizes began to arise. Something that was picked up by other manufacturers but not by Apple, which was still run by Steve Jobs, who went so far as to state that Apple would never release an iPad in a size other than the original model to market.
And so it went... until his death in October 2011, when the renowned manager died, and Apple released it's successful iPad Mini a year later, in October 2012.
Since then, Apple has been much more versatile in terms of iPad size, especially since the introduction of the iPad Pro line, with proportions previously inconceivable in its catalog. Today, the sizes of the various models available for purchase in the Apple store are as follows:
iPad Mini: 8.3 inches.
iPad : 10.2 inches.
iPad Air: 10.9 inches.
iPad Pro: 11 and 12.9 inches.
Let us recall that the initial model, introduced in 2010, had a 9-inch screen, which looked enormous at the time, but is now closer to the size supplied by the Mini model than to that of its own series.
And this makes sense, not only because of the progress of technology, but also because of the increasing amount of tablet use, a market in which Apple has been a key player, but which has also been heavily influenced by the efforts of other manufacturers, such as Samsung and Lenovo, to name a few.
Thus, for some time now, rumors have circulated pointing to the prospect of Apple taking a further step in this direction, with a possible giant iPad, a concept that has previously shown lights and shadows, but that now makes a lot more sense after the debut of iPadOS 16 last Monday.
So according Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), in a tweet, Apple is already planning to release a 14-inch iPad Pro in early-mid 2023, probably in April. A leap in scale that those from Cupertino would make with the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, which boasts a massive 14.6-inch screen. According to Young, the potential 14-inch iPad Pro might contain a tiny LED panel and Apple's Pro Motion screen technology.
