Before getting the main role in 2009's Avatar, Sam Worthington sold everything he owned and lived in a car.

In a new interview with Variety, the actor (46) revealed that his life looked drastically different shortly before he received the script for the character of Jake Sully in filmmaker James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster.

"I sold everything I had to my friends because I didn't like who I was," Worthington said, explaining that he auctioned off his items. "I had to go out. I was living in Sydney, and every time I went to a bar, people would recognize me. I rebelled against that."

At the time, Worthington said he also adapted his automobile to fit a mattress, allowing him to live on the road before taking his talents to Pandora.

People from the studio flew Worthington to Los Angeles for his tryouts for the film. He told Variety that he preferred hotel rooms to sleep in his car, and it was there that he collaborated closely with Cameron, who eventually determined he was a suitable fit for what would become his breakthrough role.

"It took us a few days to get to (Worthington), because he was somewhere on top of a mountain without a phone," producer Jon Landau told Variety. "That's how Sam is," reports People.

Why did thousands of people feel sad after watching Avatar?

The discussion received over 1,000 replies and grew so popular that site administrator Philippe Baghdassarian was forced to start a second thread for viewers to discuss depression caused by seeing Avatar.

"I wasn't personally depressed. The movie actually made me happy. But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something that we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw that we could live in a completely different world and that caused them depression," Baghdassarian said.

After watching Avatar, some viewers reported feeling so depressed that they considered suicide.

"Ever since I saw Avatar, I was depressed. Seeing the beautiful world of Pandora and the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the movie and all the tears I shed because of it. I even think about killing myself thinking that if I do, I'll be reborn in a Pandora-like world and everything is just like Avatar," one viewer wrote.
