Selena Gomez and her mother launch a mental health project

Famous actress and singer Selena Gomez has joined forces with her mother and a close friend to start a new media company that she hopes will help people have a relaxed conversation about mental health. The whole project, the 29-year-old actress confirmed, was created to help those going through mental health problems, after Gomez herself spoke openly about her own crises in the past.

A company named WonderMind caught attention after Selena appeared on the cover of the December issue of Entrepreneur magazine along with her project partners; mother and Hollywood producer Mandy Teefy, and founder of The Newsette newsletter Daniella Pierson. The three ladies want to remove the stigma from the open conversation about mental problems, and as Selena pointed out, her cooperation with business partners has never been stronger, and the latest project has helped her connect better with her mother.

"It was one of those moments when I felt closest to my mom when we talked together about something we both experienced in our own way. It was wonderful. And getting support from Danielle was even better," Gomez said.

The problem of social networks

In the interview, Selena also mentioned how important it was to put the focus on the topic of mental health through the details of her own struggle, especially the part where she faced problems on social media. She described how her own Instagram made her feel miserable and bad even though she was once the most followed star of that social network, and that she is much better since she deleted her profile.

"It was a great relief when I no longer had the feeling that I was in that little phone where people say the worst things full of hatred. Why would she fill her days with that? I also began to realize how this whole world is made up of people living unreal lives, beautiful and happy. When I finally shut down the app and looked through it, I concluded, ‘I’ll talk to the cashier about my drink and I’ll get into a conversation with the person I meet.’ The thing is, we have a human relationship with others, ”Gomez explains.

She spoke very openly about how she had gone through difficult mental states in the past and revealed that in 2015 when she was diagnosed with lupus, she had to use chemotherapy to treat it. Then, she said, she suffered from panic attacks and struggled with anxiety and depression. A year later, she moved out of public life to focus on mental health, and in 2017, she also underwent a kidney transplant. In 2018, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but as she stated earlier, it was this diagnosis that brought her relief, but also an explanation for the difficult moments from before.
