The city of Siena in Italy

The city of Siena (Saena Julia) was founded by the Romans on the site of an Etruscan settlement, and this is where modern Siena originated. Today, Siena has more than 54,000 inhabitants, mostly Italians. Many people from abroad have moved to this city in recent years. The sights of Siena are numerous. Suffice it to say that the entire old part of the city has been preserved as an urban environment with numerous cultural and artistic values.

Basilica of San Domenico and Basilica Cateriniana

One of the many sights in Siena is certainly the Gothic building of the Basilica of San Domenico. It was built in the period from 1226 to 1465. The relics of St. Catherine of Siena are kept in this church. Saint Catherine was born in Siena as the 23rd child out of a total of 25 children her parents had.

Catharine has been attracted to the church and all the events in it since her childhood. She lost her dearest sister at the age of fifteen. Catherine decides to end her secular life and joins the Dominican Tertiaries, of which there were about 100 in Siena. During the plague in Italy in 1374, she wholeheartedly helped the sick. She founded a monastery in her hometown of Siena in 1377 but did not stay there often as she was constantly traveling. Saint Catherine died on April 29, 1380, in Rome. Everyone who comes to this city once will come back and, in addition to numerous sights, you will enjoy a walk through the city streets.
