Smartphone sales down 11% in first quarter

The present global economic crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine has also had a detrimental impact on smartphone sales. According to Canalys' estimate, sales dropped by up to 11% year on year in the first half of the year.

In all, 311.2 million cellphones were introduced to the market in the first quarter of 2022, up from 347.7 million the previous year. According to the data, Samsung is once again at the top of the list of best-selling manufacturers.

Between January and March, the South Korean company delivered 73.7 million mobile devices, securing a 24 percent market share.

Apple, unsurprisingly, came in second with 56.5 million Apple iPhone devices shipped, achieving an 18% market share. At the same time, it is the only one with a sales increase of up to 8% year on year. Other Chinese manufacturers included Xiaomi (39.2 million devices), Oppo (29 million units), and Vivo (25.1 million units).

Neither of them has much cause for celebration, given the Chinese market experienced a major reduction in sales during this time period. When compared to the same period last year, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo saw up to a 20% drop in deliveries. Weak demand is ascribed to a lack of components, ongoing disease constraints, and increased inflation as a result of the Ukraine crisis.

Surprisingly, Honor was the only brand that flourished in the Chinese market at this time. With 15 million cellphones sold, the brand, which belonged to Huawei a year and a half ago, took first place. Africa and the Middle East faced similar challenges to China. Xiaomi's supplies, for example, plummeted by 30% in both regions.

North America was the only region that expanded in the fourth quarter. Because of the new series of Apple iPhone 13 cellphones, the American corporation Apple has its first place of sale there. Samsung finished second, thanks in part to the Samsung Galaxy S22 flagship series.
