The fastest route is no longer a priority: Google Maps saves gas and protects the environment!

The previously announced Google Maps change, according to which the application no longer calculates the fastest route to a given point, but the one that consumes the least fuel was launched in the U.S.

The big change will contribute to the reduction of harmful gas emissions and the preservation of the environment, and it will reach users in Europe in the coming months (iOS and Android).

The modified algorithm takes into account the consumption of fuel and other factors, and if the fastest route is the most important to you, you have the option to ask for a new direction.

Two new features

Google believes that the new system has the potential to remove one million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually, which is measured by excluding 200,000 vehicles from traffic, reports the TechCrunch portal.

The popular app introduced the "Lite navigation" function, intended for cyclists, which shows changes in the slope of the terrain and the time of arrival at the destination.

Also, a detailed map of the bike share stations for bicycles and scooters (Sharing stations) was added in 300 cities, which was finalized thanks to the cooperation with companies in the US and the EU.
