The animated adventure "The Boy and the Heron" had a great start in American cinemas. This adventure is conquering the rest of the world!
The fantastic story "Kimitachi wa dô ikiru ka" or "The Boy and the Heron" produced by the master of animation Hayao Miyazaki ( Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke ) achieved fantastic success in American cinemas. Miyazaki's new animated film earned $12.8 million in the first weekend of release in that market, becoming the first original anime film to top the box office.
The story follows a 12-year-old boy, Mahito Maki, in the Pacific War during World War II. Unfortunately, he suddenly lost his mother and had to adjust to moving to a new city with his father and stepmother. Unhappy, he is haunted by a strange talking gray heron, but with the help of this he will discover an abandoned castle that will lead them to a fantastic world.
The Boy and the Heron" is Miyazaki's relatively unexpected return to the big screen after an absence of more than a decade when he announced in 2013 that "The Wind Rises" was his last film and that he was retiring. "The Boy and the Heron" has already earned about 56 million dollars in Japan, and it's slowly making its way into the rest of the world, where it earned another 28 million. Total earnings thus far amount to an excellent 97 million dollars.
The title of Miyazaki's latest film refers to Genzaburō Yoshino's novel of the same name, which appears in the film, but the plot of the film itself has an original story unrelated to the novel. In the original, Japanese version, voices were lent by Soma Santoki, Masaki Suda, Ko Shibasaki, Aimyon, Yoshino Kimura, Takuya Kimura, Kaoru Kobayashi, and Shinobu Otake, while in the American dubbing, voices were given by mostly well-known actors such as Luca Padovan, Robert Pattinson, Karen Fukuhara, Gemma Chan, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Florence Pugh, Willem Dafoe, and Dave Bautista.
