Up to 40 minutes to boot Windows 11

If you've ever whined that Windows 11 doesn't startup as quickly as you'd like, We have to inform you that there were some folks who were much, much worse off than you until the middle of this week.

Now, it's important to note that we're talking about a very specific type of user, one that isn't characterized by their age, gender, ethnicity, or political or sporting involvement.

No, the differentiating factor, in this case, is employment duties. And it is true, among other novelties, if we check the list of improvements in the Microsoft update KB5012643 for Windows 11, we find one that surprises us:

« Resolves a problem in which certain POS terminals exhibit up to 40-minute delays in OS starting during reboot. »

Yes, you read accurately, and there was no transcription error. Although this was not previously disclosed, it appears that with specific combinations of software and hardware specific to this type of equipment, the configuration of Windows 11 posed some type of issue that, as an unexpected consequence, and also quite torturous for users.

After reading about these boot times, We admit that other moments sprang to mind, notably those of Windows installations with a slew of extra items loaded at startup on mechanical hard drives with moderate speed and connected via PATA interfaces.

We recall turning on the computer and taking advantage of the extra time to go make a coffee, smoke a cigarette while conversing with someone, and so on.

Windows 11, like its predecessor, is a very efficient operating system, and when it comes to boot speed compared to macOS, my personal experience is that they don't need to tell each other, because the startups are very fast in both cases.

Regardless, the origin of this Windows 11 problem, which has thankfully been rectified, attracts attention and causes a lot of curiosity, as well as envisioning how the organizations afflicted by this problem have dealt with it.

It's one thing to be able to make a cup of coffee in the time it takes your computer to boot up; it's quite another to have time to cook and bake some cookies to go with it.
