The beautiful Puerto Rican model, 24-year-old Sofía Jirau, emerged in the new Victoria's Secret campaign as their first model with Down Syndrome announcing the long-awaited evolution of the brand and the continuation of positive changes in the fashion industry.
“I dreamed about it and worked towards it for a long time, but today my dream has come true. I can finally reveal my big secret to you ... I am the first Victoria's Secret model with Down Syndrome!" Sofia Jirau posted on her Insta profile a couple of days back.
Her story has always been inspired by a great desire to contribute to the world despite her health condition. This is proven by her entrepreneurial steps - in 2019, she launched her online store, called "Alavett". In the same year, she debuted as a model for the first time, and a year later she showed herself to the world at one of the biggest fashion events, at New York Fashion Week, walking for designer Marisa Santiago.
Jirau is undeniably creating a new fashion history side by side with other models with Down syndrome. We should not forget Grace Strobel, as well as the now legendary Ellie Goldstein who joined the Gucci beauty campaign at the age of 18. They broke the barriers of the famously cruel fashion industry. The following year, in February, she was at the cover of Elle Mexico.
It is very encouraging that the Victoria's Secret brand has decided to follow the positive changes that have taken place in the last few years. An amazing campaign was launched on Valentine's Day and it indicates that people with disabilities definitely deserve their place in the fashion industry.
"Thank you Victoria's Secret for thinking of me as a model who has #NoLimits. I am so happy to be part of the inclusive Love Cloud Collection campaign. This is definitely just the beginning, it's official now, guys! Inside and out, borders no longer exist," said Sofía Jirau.
