What you should never say to a depressed person

Knowing what to say to someone who is depressed might be difficult if you have never experienced it. Of course, you want to be helpful, but you don't know where to begin (and you may feel so uncomfortable that you simply avoid talking). As a result, Shana Dugan, LPC of Connections Wellness Group, advises seven things you should never say to someone who is depressed.

"I'll just give you some space"

People who suffer from depression are typically reclusive and experience greater loneliness and isolation. That doesn't mean it's best to leave them alone. Support systems may be difficult to find for persons suffering from depression, and hearing someone wish to divorce as a result of melancholy can be painful and terrifying.  Sit down with him, listen to him, and demonstrate to him how important he is to you.

"You don't look depressed"

Unlike certain physical illnesses, a mental illness like depression has no ‘appearance’. Just because someone doesn't seem to be struggling with it, doesn't mean they aren't depressed.

Depression is not something that can be seen and diagnosed in an individual. Many persons who suffer from depression present a cheerful and pleasant front to others in order not to burden those around them or attract unwelcome attention.

"It could be worse"

Even though you are trying to make her feel better, reminding a depressed person that it could be worse in some way is a bad move. Even talking to someone about their despair is a tremendous achievement that demands more energy and guts than they imagine they have. As a friend or family member of this individual, it is critical that she feels heard and understood when she communicates her feelings. Even if you can think of 10 things that would make her predicament worse, don't tell anyone.

"Will be better"

It is normal for people who are depressed to be unable to see the light at the end of the road. When people are unable to find their way out of the dark pit in which they are now living, such remarks might bring pessimism, helplessness, and defeat.
