Why I actually left "Grey's Anatomy": Katherine Heigl finally gave an explanation 11 years later

Actress Katherine Heigl, who played beloved character Dr. Izzie Stevens in "Grey's Anatomy", finally spoke publicly and in detail about her departure from this project in 2010. In the book "How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Gray's Anatomy" by Lynette Rice, Heigl gave her side of the story.

"I started a family, and it changed everything," the actress began, as reported by The Daily Telegraph last week.

"It changed my desire to work full-time. I went on family leave and just got to be a mom, and it changed my whole perspective…that was really the turning point" added Katherine, who adopted a daughter in 2008 with her husband, musician Josh Kelley.

It further stated that Katherine had an honest conversation with Shonda Rhimes, a screenwriter, director, and producer who rose to fame after creating "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice", "Scandal". She admitted to her that she wanted to leave the set.

"So before I was due back, I spoke again to Shonda about wanting to leave, then I waited at home until I was given the formal okay that I was off the show. The rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue. She (Shonda) tried for a while to figure out that I might not be able to do both. To be a dedicated mother, but also Izzie (Stevens). There wasn't a great way to compromise the work schedule that didn't negatively affect the crew or the cast. It wasn't feeling fair to them or the show to ask them to bend around my needs."

Izzie was "erased" from the show in 2010.

Although her departure certainly was not smooth, nor was it easy, Katherine admits that she "played a big role" in that as well, referring to the comments that she was being "ungrateful".

"The 'ungrateful' thing bothers me the most. And that is my fault," the actress said. "I allowed myself to be perceived that way. So much about living life, to me, is about humility and gratitude. And I've tried very hard to have those qualities and be that person, and I'm just so disappointed in myself that I allowed it to slip." she concluded, while the public eagerly awaits the comment from Shonda Rhimes on this matter.
