A big budget is not always a guarantee of success!
Only one film from this year with a budget of more than 200 million has made money so far!
This year, exactly 13 films had a budget of more than 200 million dollars, and in December will arrive, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom". However, most of those films are still struggling to make money, because, in addition to the film's budget, all kinds of promotions must also be included in the expenses.
This means that the final results of earnings from the cinema box office and from digital versions of films, which are not always transparent, cannot be the only measure of a film's success. Of 14 films, seven are Disney's, nine are sequels or new versions of existing works, and five belong to the world of Marvel and DC film adaptations of comic books.
The idea that a film has to be expensive in order to be attractive to viewers is not new, but this year it got a little worse with corona and strikes, so the promotional periods got longer and the costs increased.
Although most of the mentioned films made more than their budget, only one really made a lot of money for the authors, and that is James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy 3".
Once upon a time, superheroes and other spectacles were cheaper, so Deadpool from 2016 cost 58 and earned 782 million at the box office. For example, this year, "Barbie" made big money, $1.44 billion, and cost $135 million, which is still less than $200 million.
On the other hand, there is "Five Nights at Freddy's ", which, despite mixed reviews, has turned a budget of 20 million into earnings of 272 million so far. That is a great number. A big budget is not always a guarantee of success! The movie "Captain Marvel 2", which is currently in cinemas, seems like it will continue this negative trend because so far it has not been successful, but some analysts believe that it still has a chance to recover the invested money and earn something over it.
This raised many questions about the tactics of the big studios, the continuation of franchises that cannot take a break, and thoughts about what to do next. Statistics show that people are eager to go to the cinema and they will reward original ideas if there is someone who would not play the safe ticket, but do something new and original.
