AMD: Graphics card drivers overclock Ryzen CPUs

What are the benefits of an AMD driver over an Nvidia driver? Overclocking the graphics card is also possible with the AMD driver, making applications like Afterburner unnecessary.

Overclocking the CPU of AMD chips directly in the driver using the Ryzen master module has been viable for some time now. However, with Adrenalin 22.3.1, this function has become independent and overwrites user input via Curve Optimizer or from the UEFI. More about this can be found further down.

Until recently, overclocking on Windows required the use of two different programs for PCs with AMD graphics cards and AMD processors. AMD Adrenaline graphics driver for the graphics card and Ryzen Master for processor adjustments AMD unified both last year and added an automatic overclocking option for the CPU in the graphics driver, as well as continued to link Ryzen Master.

Several sources have reported issues with the overclocking function, which AMD has now acknowledged. Igor Wallossek of Igors Lab was able to duplicate the problem from a community member's post and narrow it down to Adrenalin 22.3.1.

For the first time, while loading a GPU profile, this driver not only accepts new GPU voltages and clock rates but also automatically adjusts CPU parameters.

An error notice may appear if a custom configuration in the UEFI or the Curve Optimizer is used, and the GPU profile may only be loaded after a restart. However, the graphics driver's Ryzen master module then overwrote some CPU configuration options, potentially causing system instability.

The issue also appears to affect systems whose GPU profiles were still generated with old drivers, implying that manual intervention and resetting the UEFI settings may be required for many systems.

In the interim, the Radeon Software Slimmer, which may disable the driver's Ryzen master module, is a viable option. AMD has finally noticed the problem and launched an inquiry at the request of Toms Hardware, but has sadly not provided a rapid solution.

According to the present situation, the faulty Radeon Adrenalin 22.3.1 is still available on the Californian website and should not be installed.
