Charlize Theron's tragic childhood

Charlize Theron says she’s “not ashamed” to talk about the moment her mom shot her and killed her father in self-defense. Although no one would say that watching this rich, beautiful and talented actress, her life was really hard. The actress was 15 when her alcoholic dad shot through the door of the room where she was hiding with her mom. She spent her childhood on a farm near Johannesburg in South Africa, where she lived with her mother Gerda Jacoba Aletta, and father Charles Jacobus Theron.

When she was only 15, a terrible situation happened to her, which the actress always talks about openly. Namely, her father was an alcoholic. One day he returned home so drunk that he started shooting at Charlize and her mother. “No bullets hit us, which was a real miracle. But in self-defense, she ended the agony” - she told National Public American Radio.

She described her father as a "very sick man" and that life with an alcoholic was quite hopeless. Charlize explained in detail the situation that marked her for the rest of her life. She said her father was so drunk that day that he could not stand and had a gun in his hand. “My mother and I were leaning against the door in the bedroom because he was pushing them. We both leaned back so he wouldn't come in. He took a step back and shot at the door three times. It is a real miracle that no bullet hit us. In self-defense, she shot at him” - said the actress.

Although she openly talks about childhood trauma today, she was ashamed of it then. “At that time, I pretended that it didn't happen, because I didn't want to talk about it. I told people that my father died in a car accident. Who would want to tell such a story? Nobody knows how to react when you tell them that your father was an alcoholic and that your mother killed him. I didn't want to be seen as a victim” - she revealed on one occasion. Charlize Theron's mother was acquitted because it was proven that it was self-defense.
