Fans of the hit series in shock: Mark Harmon gives up the badge and exits 'NCIS' after 19 seasons
When it comes to the future of his character, never count on Leroy Jethro Gibbs being completely excluded, says producer
Actor Mark Harmon (70) shocked many fans with his decision to leave one of CBS’s longest-running series “NCIS” - after 19 seasons and four additional episodes, he will no longer play the lead role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
"As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show... So regarding the future of Gibbs, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years…never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out,” reads a statement from lead screenwriter and producer Steven Binder.

CBS declined to comment on whether that means that Harmon may eventually reprise his role in future episodes.
Gibbs’ decision to give up his badge followed his suspension from season 18 for attacking a dog killer and abuser and after a ship explosion that nearly killed him. The favorite TV agent’s journey ended in an episode of “Great Wide Open” that aired Monday, in which Gibbs clashed with opponent Paul Lemere (played by Jason Wiles ).
Gibbs said goodbye to his loved ones, and the most touching scene is certainly the one with Tim McGee. Deciding to stay in Alaska, Gibbs tells him that he hasn't felt "such peace, since the death of his first wife and daughter."

The farewell was very emotionally portrayed in the series, even the tears of the cast were probably real, and fans have yet to see if Rule 91 will apply in the series - "if you leave, don't turn around".
Gibbs has been an unavoidable part of the entire NCIS world, including “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “NCIS: Hawaii,” and it’s hard to believe he won’t appear in the series after all, at least from time to time. But fans and the entire team of the series will miss him quite a bit.
