Justice Smith becomes a member of "The American Society of Magical Negroes"!
Kobi Libii's long-awaited directorial debut will captivate Sundance next year!
One of the titles that will attract attention at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival is Kobi Libii's directorial debut "The American Society of Magical Negroes", whose first trailer we have the opportunity to watch today.
The trailer begins with the Black protagonist, Aren, who is portrayed as uncomfortable as he walks through "a room full of White people" and is recruited to the secret society of African-American wizards. His tutor, Roger, explains that the belief of society is to protect White people from discomfort in order to prevent them from harming Black people.
What can we expect?
The film "The American Society of Magical Negroes" brings us Justice Smith in the role of Aren, a young man who suddenly finds himself inside the titular mysterious organization. After narrowly escaping a racial microaggression that spiraled out of control, he was offered the chance to join a mysterious magical society. The American Society of Magical Negroes has an incredible task: working together they use their wide range of powers to make the lives of white people easier, something that is considered of utmost importance.
This romantic comedy promises a satirical look at society, race, and the motif of the "magical black man," deconstructing racist stereotypes about blacks relegated to supporting roles in white stories. All the while, it promises an honest story of Aren's coming of age as he discovers what it means to care for himself and others.
Smith leads a strong cast that also includes David Alan Grier, An-Li Bogan, Drew Tarver, Rupert Friend, and Nicole Byer.
The film "The American Society of Magical Negroes" has its premiere at the 40th Sundance Film Festival, which takes place from January 18 to 28, and the film will be released in cinemas on March 22 next year. We are sure that is worth waiting!
