LG XBOOM GO PL5 - Cheap Bluetooth speaker

The XBOOM PL5 we tested is in the middle, between the larger PL7 and the smaller PL2. In all cases, the speaker is the result of a collaboration with MERIDIAN, who provided the technology for sound processing and reproduction, ensuring a superb presentation.

XBOOM is primarily intended for carrying, so its manufacturing is tailored to that purpose: the plastic section is wrapped in a rubberized surface for a more firm grip and impact resistance.

The cylinder shape with beveled sides has no substantial protrusions that could present an issue when transporting or removing the speaker from the bag/backpack. Unfortunately, no eyelet or loop for hanging is provided. The installed inverters are concealed beneath the perforated front side, while the sides have a pair of passive emitters with a backlight.

As suspended liabilities are not mechanically safeguarded against potential harm, this location is likely the weakest link in the structure. On the other hand, there is a rubber door on the back of the speaker that conceals three buttons, a USB-C power connector, and a 3.5 mm port for an external audio source.

The IPX5 certification, which offers protection against dust and water splashing from any direction at a specific pressure, is especially useful when used outside.

The craftsmanship is excellent, everything fits flawlessly, and there is no will anywhere. A charging cable with a USB-C connector, a connecting signal cable with a pair of 3.5 mm jacks, and instructions are included in the package.

On the top of the speaker, there are six clear-press buttons, however, only three have notification LEDs. You'd be hard-pressed to find another backlight; for greater tactile control, there's simply a little protrusion at the volume selector, which you'll have to illuminate when working.

Speaking of backlighting, the circles with LEDs that are part of the passives may be lighted in a variety of colors, with the option of selecting a light effect that changes in time with the music being played.

LG offers a diverse set of codecs, as well as input for an external source and a voice assistant. There is also good endurance, which can be increased by turning off the color flashing. The ability to connect two devices at the same time while switching playback is quite useful.

The corporate application can also be used for control, but its capabilities are severely limited, and it only provides an overview of the fundamental tasks managed not through the speaker, but through the mobile phone. You won't lose much if you don't install it.

  • Power: 20 W
  • Converters: 2 × (manufacturer does not specify)
  • Microphone: yes
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.0
  • Codecs: SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX-HD
  • Battery: endurance up to 18 h, charging max 4 h
  • Interface: USB-C for charging
  • Dimensions: 201 × 79 × 79 mm
  • Weight: 620 g

However, this sound can surprise this crumb with a really nice and balanced performance, especially when listening carefully; it can readily manage a room up to roughly 35m 2; if you want to play in a larger space, you will also meet size limitations here.

The Sound Boost mode, which complements higher mids and highs and completes the feeling of space rendition, can be activated as part of sound editing. As a result, the sound is cleaned, but the bass component is slightly muffled. When evaluating the sound, the location of the speaker is also quite essential.

The horizontal plane's directionality is obvious here; you can improve the expression by rotating it slightly backward or placing it at the listener's ear level. As a result, a speaker placed on a medium-high chest of drawers will most likely have a better expression than one positioned lower.

If you're looking for a more powerful model, consider the PL7. Its construction is fairly similar, although it is larger in general and has a declared power of 30 W.
