MacBook Pro M2 2022 - New Beast from Cupertino
An interesting surprise, given we expected a MacBook Air and even a desktop computer from the Apple M2, but the possibility of a MacBook Pro M2 2022 seemed less possible based on rumors. It is true, however, that we are not dealing with a revamp like the one seen with the MacBook Air, and in reality, Apple has paid relatively little time to the presentation in contrast.
Be careful, we do not mean to imply that it is a minor update, because simply switching to the Apple M2 from its predecessor will result in a noticeable increase in its performance, even though it is true that a large portion of the news that it receives is similar to that seen in the MacBook Air, and that a large portion of it is directly related to the new Apple SoC. Still, let's examine what unique characteristics this MacBook Pro M2 2022 has.
To begin, we are discussing a MacBook Pro with a 13.3-inch screen; the 14 and 16-inch models are still using the previous iteration of the SoC, so we can anticipate them upgrading to Apple M2 anytime between October of this year and the summer of 2023. The screen is a 13.3-inch Retina with True Tone, with a native resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, a density of 227 dots per inch, and a brightness of 500 nits.
Unlike the MacBook Air, we can see components of active dissipation in this MacBook Pro M2 2022, indicating that we are dealing with a computer engineered to sustain extremely demanding workloads on a continual basis. This is confirmed by the fact that, in this case, we can only choose the SoC model with the 10-core GPU, which is the current top of the Apple M2 range, and that it has hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, video encoding and decoding engine, and ProRes encoding and decoding engine for video editing up to 8K.
Another significant difference between the MacBook Pro M2 2022 and the Air is its autonomy, which in this case can reach up to 20 hours of video playback in the Apple TV app and up to 17 hours of wireless web browsing thanks to the efficiency of the Apple M2 and its 58.2 watt/hour lithium polymer battery. As with the MacBook Air, we have a 67-watt rapid charge option in this scenario.
This MacBook Pro M2 2022 retains the two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports compatible with DisplayPort and the audio minijack connector, which is not surprising given that we are talking about an upgrade rather than a redesign.
The new MacBook Pro M2 2022 will be available in July with configurations of 8, 16, and 24 gigabytes of unified memory, as well as 256 GB, 512 GB, 1, and 2 terabytes of storage, based on the Apple M2 with 10-core GPU. The entry-level model, with 8 gigabytes of memory and 256 gigabytes of storage, will cost 1,619.00 dollars, while the top-of-the-line model, with 24 gigabytes of memory and two terabytes of storage, will cost 2,999.00 USD.
