"Fellow Travelers" is the story of two lovers - a war hero and a young Washington bureaucrat. This romance began in 1952 and lasted for four decades.
The series is an epic love story and political thriller that follows the secret romance of two very different men who meet in Washington during the McCarthy era. Matt Bomer plays the charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially lucrative political career behind the scenes. Hawkins "Hawk" Fuller is a war hero who works in Washington in the era of Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy and fights heartily against the scourge of communism. Unfortunately, there are not only reds on McCarthy's wallpaper, in the Washington bureaucracy there is a hearty attempt to exterminate every trace of the gay population, although one can justifiably suspect what McCarthy's preferences are.

Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements - until he meets Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a young man brimming with idealism and faith. They start a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on "subversives and sexual deviants". That was the beginning of one of the darkest periods in American history of the 20th century.

Over the course of four decades, we follow the five main characters – Hawk, Tim, Marcus (Jelani Alladin), Lucy (Allison Williams) and Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts) – as they encounter each other through the anti-Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled hedonism of the 1970s disco scene. and the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, facing obstacles in the world and within himself.

The goal, Nyswaner said, was not to produce a show about the oppression of gay people, but about “the danger of giving yourself to another human being.” “I use the book as a starting point, but wanted to go beyond the book and watch our characters over 35 years,” said Nyswaner, showrunner and executive producer on the series.
