Oregano - beneficial effects on human health!

Oregano (Origanum vulgare, Lamiaceae) is a well-known culinary and medicinal plant from the plant family Lamiaceae. This family is known for containing large amounts of phytochemicals that give them a characteristic smell and exhibit a large number of medicinal effects. It is used in traditional medicine and cooking for thousands of years. Active compounds that give the plant a unique and pleasant smell are thymol, pinene, limonene, carvacrol, ocimene and caryophyllene. It is believed that oregano contains a large number of powerful antioxidants and exhibits antibacterial effects.

Some of the many medicinal effects of this plant are:

1. Oregano and strengthening of immunity

Two very important components of oregano are rosmarinic acid and thymol. These compounds exhibit antioxidant effects and are closely related to the reduction of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is the main cause of many diseases of modern man such as diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Free radicals involved in oxidative stress are by-products of cellular metabolism and can cause cancer and other chronic diseases. Therefore, adding oregano (or its oil) to your diet can improve your overall immune status and protect your body from disease.

2. Antibacterial action

In addition to the indirect antibacterial effect through the strengthening of immunity, oregano also exhibits a direct antibacterial effect thanks to the high concentration of thymol and carvacrol. These two important organic compounds can defend the body against a wide range of bacteria that can infect the skin, intestines and gastrointestinal tract and other organs and organ systems. Oregano contains compounds that can influence the increased production of white blood cells and accelerate metabolism, which results in faster recovery from common illnesses.

3. Improves heart health

Oregano is a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, beneficial fatty acids that improve the health of your heart and overall cardiovascular system. Also, omega-3 fatty acids help regulate the appropriate level of cholesterol and reduce inflammation in the cardiovascular system, thus preventing the occurrence of atherosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes.
