Piega Coax GEN2: The next generation speakers

Anyone who mentions Piega must also mention ribbon tweeter – often known as coaxial ribbon. Over decades of hard effort, the Swiss have not only improved the superb tweeter but also created a mid-high speaker that is simply unique due to its coaxial design.

And now, with the Piega Coax GEN2 (the Swiss's new top class), this amazing masterpiece has been fully redesigned. The Swiss completed the new models in time for HIGH END 2022, and all information about the new coaxes is now available.

The story of Piega's ribbon development is so charming that you can't stop telling it. Kurt Scheuch, the co-founder of Piega, swiftly handed the matter over to developer Aldo Ballabio.

Several years ago, he turned over the work to his son Mario, who then trained his daughter to take over the intricate structure of the firm after he left. That is referred to be a family custom…

Almost every advancement in loudspeaker design involves reduced distortion and more fine and coarse dynamics. Ballabio used the new generation of mid-high coax to reinforce the solid front panel with more cross bracing, allowing him to reinforce the tweeter with another neodymium magnet and enable it to generate greater sound pressure.

The original version of coax was incredibly efficient, with a sound pressure level of more than 95 dB.

According to Piega's catalog text, "from the pattern of the foil, the magnet structure, to the dampening of the mechanical construction - nothing was left undisturbed and every element was placed to the touchstone and recalibrated" for the new drivers.

The GEN2 coaxes, for example, were provided foil with a newly designed unique coating that linearizes the frequency response. This allows for a stronger coupling to the woofer.

What the Piega developers do not cover: The crossover frequency of the GEN2 drivers is also 450 Hertz. This ensures a high degree of minimal distortion.

However, the new Piega Coax GEN2 series loudspeakers are made up of more than just mid-high drivers. The already tried-and-true UHQD basses now have a redesigned housing, built of a smooth extruded aluminum profile.

Piega had previously employed an in-house created Tension Improve Module (TIM), which allowed the Swiss company to apply regulated tension to the inside of the loudspeaker housing and therefore effectively eliminate housing vibrations.

The new TIM2 module operates in a similar manner: the module is tightly linked to the housing, and the housing walls are strained. As a result, "the rigidity of the housing is greatly increased again," according to Piega resident Ingo Trebing.

The new Coax GEN2 range has an attractive optical appearance that is distinctive of Piega and originates from the office of Swiss designer Stefan Hürlemann. Here is a list of all models:

The differences are mainly in the bass range, where Piega now uses additional passive membranes – at least for the floor-standing speakers.

Of course, that looks tremendous when, in the case of the Coax 611, five bass membranes are located one below the other on the front. The new mid-high coax is also available in different sizes.

Piega has created a matching center for the three stereo boxes mentioned: the Center 211, which costs 4,900 USD. It has the new C112 coax and two UHQD woofers in the 16 cm class. The landscape-format speaker is believed to have good voice intelligibility and a similar tone.

Everyone attending HIGH END 2022 will be able to easily find the newest Piega Coax GEN2 speakers in Atrium 4, Room E117.
