Prince Philip's will to remain sealed: The world will know its contents in 90 years

The will of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, will remain secret for at least 90 years in order to protect the "dignity and position" of the Queen, the court decided.

It is a tradition of more than a century, that, after the death of a member of the royal family, the courts are required to seal their wills.

This means that they are not available to the public, and after 90 years, a private process will be held to decide whether the will can be unsealed.

A private hearing was held in July regarding the application to seal the will. It was held by Judge Sir Andrew McFarlane who heard the arguments of the lawyers who represented Prince Philip, reports the BBC.

Sir Andrew said that as president of the Family Division of the High Court, he is the custodian of the safe, which contains more than 30 envelopes, each of which contains a sealed will of a dead member of the Royal Family.

Prince Philip passed away in April this year at the age of 99.
