Rapper found guilty of shooting

Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper, was found guilty by a jury in the 2020 shooting of hip-hop artist Meghan Thee Stallion following a boozy Hollywood night out.

The American singer testified in court in Los Angeles, where the two former lovers confronted each other, about Lanez shooting her in the legs and forcing her to dance.

Lanez, who was clad in a pink jacket and pants, was handcuffed and sent to prison immediately after being found guilty. As the verdict was read, he made no outward emotion.

The court jury consisted of seven women and five men, and it made its decision on Thursday. Her ruling found the 30-year-old Canadian rapper, whose actual name is Daystar Peterson, guilty of assault with a semi-automatic rifle, possession of a loaded unlicensed weapon in a vehicle, and grossly negligent discharge of a firearm.

The jury also decided that the attack had aggravating circumstances, which means Lanez may face up to 22 years in jail and deportation when he is sentenced on Jan. 25.

The rapper pled not guilty and declined to testify in court.

The case became a symbol of how women are treated in hip-hop circles in the United States. The lawsuit dates back to 2020 and involves a dispute between two ex-lovers following an evening spent at Kylie Jenner's house.

The fight started while the two stars were returning by automobile from that evening.

Megan Thee Stallion, who collaborates with Beyoncé and won three Grammy Awards in 2021, told the jury that her ex-lover shot her in the legs.

Tori Lanez promised Megan Thee Stallion, actual name Megan Peet, $1 million to remain quiet about the incident.

The two-star vehicles were halted by police shortly after the event. When the singer was rushed to the hospital, she initially stated that she had been hurt by a shard of glass.

She informed the court that she reacted in that manner because of the police's laxity, just a few months after the killings of George Floyd and Briona Taylor, two African-Americans killed by police.

During the eight-day trial, supporters of Megan and Lanez gathered outside the courtroom as well as inside the packed courtroom and corridor. The atmosphere was strained at times, but usually quiet until the verdict was read.

Following the reading, her counsel stated that the jury did the right thing and that she was happy with the justice she received.

Lanez began producing videos in 2009, and his fame has progressively grown since then. His previous two albums charted in the top ten on Billboard.

Megan Thee Stallion was already a great emerging star at the time of the incident, and her fame has only risen since then.
