She couldn't cope with fame: Sandra Oh speaks about the trauma after "Grey's Anatomy"
The actress talked about the 'traumatic' experience she's been through due to the insane success of the series "Grey's Anatomy". The stress and pressure of fame had to turn into therapy
You may know her, among other things, from the iconic role of Cristina Yang in the series "Grey's Anatomy". There, she created an ambitious, state-of-the-art character, but also closely related to the main character, Meredith Grey, with whom she climbed up the ladder of the medical career. Sandra Oh was part of this medical crew from the hospital in Seattle for many years, gaining international fame. She left the series in 2014, breaking fans' hearts. However, she had an open career path and a respected name in this industry, which often proved to be a curse.
Last weekend, she gave an interview for Sunday Today in which she admits that her fame surpassed her.
"It was traumatic. So when one loses one's anonymity, you have to build skills to still try and be real. I went from not being able to go out, like, hiding in restaurants, to then being able to manage attention, manage expectation, while not losing the sense of self" she said.
The actress asked for the help of a therapist so that she could cope with people's attention and stress. In one interview, she admitted that mental health is very important.
"You need to work on finding a way to find balance in your life. The therapy was helpful to me" said Sandra.
Although she feels much better in the public sphere today, after leaving the series "Grey's Anatomy" after 10 seasons, she does not intend to return. Over the last decade, she has also won the hearts of fans with the lead role of the series "Killing Eve" (HBO MAX) for which she won the Golden Globe. She continues to develop as an actress and faces many challenges.
Recently, Oh has continued to grace our screens and is currently starring in the new Netflix series, "The Chair".
