"Decision to Leave" is a South Korean "romantic mystery" directed, co-scripted and produced by Chan-Wook Park, a respected name in the world of movies and he is best known for the film Oldboy. It premiered in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival, where Park won in the director category. It was released in world cinemas on October 14, last year.
The beginning of the film presents us with the death of an immigration officer who fell off a cliff while hiking. On the scene comes Hae-jun ( Hae-Il Park ), a detective suffering from insomnia because he is haunted by unsolved murders in his career. During the investigation, he begins to suspect that his wife Seo-Rae ( Tang Wei) pushed him off the cliff. She is a lovely, mysterious Chinese woman who works as a carer, hates mountains and seems to have the perfect alibi. The investigation boils down to his spying on the suspect, and the whole process soon becomes a web of deception, expressed and unexpressed wishes.
The deceased man's wife certainly had a motive since her husband was violent, but her calm demeanor and general appearance of compassion certainly do not befit a murderer. Her alibi is that she was at work at the time taking care of an elderly woman and definitely doesn't seem capable of cold-blooded murder. Something bothers Hae-jun about the case, but also about Seo-rae. He continues to monitor her movements and behavior even after everyone assumes that her husband's death was a suicide (the reasons for this are a little more complicated or far simpler, depending on what is observed) and becomes even more distant from his wife with whom he shares a "weekend marriage" because he is in Busan during the working week.
"Decision to Leave" is the new film of the celebrated South Korean filmmaker Chan-Wook Park, a romantic thriller mystery in which the complex psychological and intellectual relationship of the main characters is significantly more important than the investigation procedure.
