"Stander"- when a policeman becomes a criminal!

"Stander", is a South African action/biographical drama from proven Canadian director Bronwen Hughes (The Life and Death of Dan Eldon, On the Way Down, Call Saul). This is a tense and dark experience that every lover of the seventh art should definitely watch.

A man on both sides of the law

"Stander", as you might guess from the title, is a screen adaptation of the truly unusual life story of André Charles Stander - a South American police commander but also one of the most notorious bank robbers in the history of that particular country. In the period from 1977 to 1980 together with his gang (the so-called "Stander Gang") he managed to rob as many as thirty banks.

However, the Stander (Thomas Jane) we meet at the very beginning of the film is apparently still relatively far from the hard life on the other side of the law. Recently married to the lovely Bekkie (Deborah Kara Unger), dangerously charismatic and highly respected by his colleagues, Stander is, by all possible indicators, a promising police chief  (the youngest in the history of the state) for whom only the sky is the limit.

Shaken by the many injustices of apartheid, police officer Andre Stander decides to turn his back on the law. Everything that happened after that entered the legend as an unforgettable fight of a small man against the system, in an incredible and mostly completely true plot.

Deciding to finally punish the system, Stander sets out to rob banks, aware of how easy it is possible for him to come to the scene of his own crime as an investigator. A long-standing, unprecedented series of brazen and fearless robberies begin, and Stander slowly gains partners in crime.

In addition to the excellent Jane, there is also the sensual, inimitable Deborah Kara Unger as well as David O'Hara.
