Series based on video games! (PART TWO)

Video games are a new source of inspiration for Hollywood and numerous streaming services in their eternal search for original content.

Although history has taught us that video game adaptations don't always end well, a lot could change because there is a bunch of new series in the works, behind which are truly talented people who have taken the job seriously. In addition, The Last of Us showed us how not to mess up.

Disco Elysium

The game, written and designed by the Estonian novelist Robert Kravitz, was from the very beginning more of a well-written novel, and everything we saw already at first glance seemed worthy of a screen version.

The action is set in Elysium, a world with six thousand years of history and nations that follow one of four main ideologies: communism, fascism, moralism, and ultra-liberalism. All these ideologies and historical events intertwine at the moment when the drunk amnesiac detective Harrier Du Bois wakes up in a hotel room and begins to investigate the case of a murdered mercenary leader who died during an attempt to quell a strike of port workers.

God of War

This is another ambitious Sony franchise with a huge fan base that, if done right, could result in a truly quality fantasy series. All the more because the story of Kratos has so much material that, depending on the success, we could have at least five seasons ahead of us.

However, the series that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (The Expanse) are planning for Amazon would concentrate on the Norse phase of the story in which the already old and hardened hero with the Midgard tries to stop Ragnarok that threatens to destroy the whole world.

The series was approved last December, so we don't have much information about the plans at this stage.

Alan Wake

The story of the horror novelist Alan Wake in the first two sequels was a cute homage to Stephen King's hits. Not overly original, but a fun horror story full of commonplaces in this type of entertainment. But plans that began back in late 2018 became more ambitious over time, and in May 2022, AMC confirmed that they had taken over the development of the series.
