Star Wars technologies are evolving today

Once upon a time in a distant galaxy, we looked at technologies that were too abstract for today’s concepts. Although technology has not advanced at the speed we wanted, and teleport has by no means become the default means of transportation, part of what we know from the Star Wars series is being seriously developed in laboratories around the world.

Of course, we'll have to wait until we get commercial spacecraft that can bend time and space to move from one galaxy to another in the blink of an eye, but in the meantime, some of the Star Wars technologies are finally getting their more or less commercial versions.

Combat robots

Robots in the ranks of the military have been present in the last few decades, although they still do not have the nature of one R2D2 and C3PO. Artificial intelligence has led to serious advances in the field of problem-solving in flight, with companies such as Boston Dynamics developing the fourth generation of their robots.

Atlas, a human-like robot, has come to the point where he can withstand sprints, do somersaults and run backward, while Spot, a robot dog, is an autonomous multi-purpose version of an assistant.

Although they are not designed to fight, we would not mind meeting them in a dark street…

Light swords

The popular lightsaber is perhaps the most controversial weapon in history and the most popular among children of all ages who have ever passed a movie, comic, or Star Wars-themed series. In the popular series, this weapon consists of a plasma blade that retracts when not in use, while the base contains a cyber crystal.

Although lightsabers are still far from reality, one YouTube creator has created several smart (and deadly) laser swords that are very close to what we call a lightsaber.

Back in 2018, Hacksmith essentially created a retractable plasma sword that reaches a temperature of 2,200 degrees Celsius and can cut a titanium block.

Instead of cyber crystals, this sword uses a serious combination of propane and oxygen and requires a large tank, so you can't just hang it on a belt…

Landspeeder (hover power)

If you remember the famous races with young Anakin in Star Wars: Episode I against Sebulba, hovercrafts are a favorite vehicle across the galaxy. Would you be surprised if we told you that hovercraft have existed since the 1950s, but that vehicles that do not touch the ground have reached high speeds only recently?

The American companies Malloy Aeronautics and Aeroflex have invented promising prototypes, and the Mojave Desert is especially popular for riding such hover engines…
