If you like natural, traditional and local products, you should definitely try the Cretan diet, during which 3 times more fat is consumed compared to the average in Western countries, and the only oil that is allowed is olive.

A pleasant surprise and what distinguishes this diet from many others is that three times more bread is consumed on it than in the standard Western diet, and meat and fish are only a small part of what is eaten. In practice, this means that lean meat is eaten once a week, and fish two to three times a week, while the basic foods on which the diet rests are fruits, legumes and vegetables.

The rules of the Cretan diet

  • When preparing food, use only olive oil.
  • For dessert, eat a lot of fresh fruit, and limit the consumption of sweets that contain large amounts of sugar and saturated fat.
  • Eat as much plant-based foods as possible, such as vegetables, bread and cereals, stone fruits, nuts and seeds.
  • Cheese and yogurt are allowed to be eaten but in small quantities.
  • Eat fish and meat a maximum of 4 times a week in small to moderate amounts, and do not eat red meat more often than possibly once a week.
  • Try to use seasonal foods of local origin as much as possible, and avoid everything that requires long transportation to the place where you live.
