Former Minister Denis MacShane recalls embarrassing anecdotes with the Queen of England in his new book
Queen Elizabeth II was thrilled when her minister Denis MacShane stated that she "looks great for her age and has great legs."
Former MP Denis MacShane admitted he was very upset when former politician, actor, and writer, Gyles Brandreth, publicly announced his compliment about the Queen. Deeply ashamed and frightened that he would get into trouble, MacShane called the then private secretary of Queen Elizabeth II to apologize, but was surprised when he replied that the queen had said it was "the most beautiful thing any of her ministers had ever said about her."
MacShane, who worked at the State Department for four years, three of them as British Minister for Europe, also recalled these anecdotes in his book 'Must Labor Always Lose'. So it says that gossiping over a few drinks with Brandreth on a plane, just a few weeks after he met Queen Elizabeth II, almost cost him his face because Brandreth made public his "look at the shape of the queen's legs."
"When I saw it in public, my heart stopped. I said something I was not allowed to say publicly about the Queen, and it was the worst possible offense a minister could commit. When I came to the office, I saw my co-workers turning their heads from me for what I did, ” MacShane writes in his book.
"I knew the Queen's private secretary as a friend and neighbor who had a house in France near where I often stayed. I called him in a panic. 'Robin, Robin,' I stammered, but he interrupted me immediately. 'Don't say anything, "Her Majesty says it is the nicest thing one of her ministers has ever said about her," the book reads.
