The mysterious death of Dylan McDermott's mother was solved only 40 years later, and it is bizarre that for a while he did not even know that he was left without her
Dylan McDermott was left without a mother when he was just five years old, and years later he did his best to uncover the truth about her horrific death.
American actor Dylan McDermott had a long and successful career, and his most famous role was played in the series "Law and Order", in which he solved many crimes and mysteries as a detective, but he also managed to solve the biggest one in his private life.
Namely, today, 59-year-old Dylan solved the mystery of the murder of his own mother Diana, 45 years after the violent crime took place. Diane McDermott was fatally wounded by a gunshot wound in February 1967, when Dylan was only five years old and was a key witness in the investigation, although he did not actually see the shooting.
Dylan heard screams and gunshots when he was in the backyard of the family home, from which he was then thrown out by his mother's boyfriend, otherwise a famous gangster and heroin addict John Sponza. Police and ambulance arrived quickly at the scene, but unfortunately, his mother was beyond help. As many as four decades of Diane McDermott’s death were treated as an accident, however, in 2011 Dylan asked police to reopen the investigation.
At first, the re-investigation was hampered by the fact that all official files and photos from that time were lost or missing, and the prime suspect could not be re-examined because he was found dead in 1972 in the trunk of a parked car near a Massachusetts store.
However, by re-examining protected witnesses and reviewing media clips, police detectives began to slowly unravel the mystery and came to the conclusion that Sponza was the killer. What is most shocking, they came to the realization that the police once covered up his involvement in the crime and announced that everything was an accident.
Sources they spoke to revealed to them that Sponza's father was a guard at New Haven Prison and that he had pulled his son out of trouble several times, and another source also revealed that he was a police informant. He initially claimed he was cleaning the gun while Diana was preparing dinner, and then told the lead investigator that she had committed suicide. But she was right-handed, and the deadly wound was on the left side of the back of her neck, so it was actually impossible for her to take her own life.
Police Superintendent Michael Gugliotti, who later worked on the case, was shocked by the abuse Dylan's family had suffered for years.
"Sponza told police that the family rarely quarreled, but everyone they spoke to, including Dylan, who was five at the time, remembered the very violent quarrels. Dylan remembered very well how he hit him with a gun, but also how he pointed a weapon at him. Probably because of that, he was also traumatized, " he said.
Police later revealed to the media the reason why Dylan wanted to investigate his mother's death again after so many years.
"In order to survive and get to where he is today, he had to bury that moment deep inside himself. He said he had only recently reached the point where he could go through it all again," police confirmed to the media.
By the way, Dylan found out about his mother's death only a year later because his grandmother Avis Marino wanted to spare him the tragedy.
