The Sundance Film Festival returns to Utah
Robert Redford is one of the founders of America's greatest independent film festival, which returns to the mountains of Utah on January 19 after two previous editions were forced to take place online.
Documentaries about sexuality and fame told through the lives of supermodel Brooke Shields, musician Little Richard, and writer Judy Blume will be shown at the Sundance Film Festival next month, according to AFP.
Robert Redford is one of the founders of America's greatest independent film festival, which returns to the mountains of Utah on January 19 after being forced to take place online in the past two editions owing to Covid.
Typically, the festival features a variety of dramas, thrillers, horror, and comedy, as well as intriguing experiments and notable documentaries.
Anne Hathaway, Emilia Clarke, Jason Momoa, and Chiwetel Ejiofor have feature films in the works, while Emilia Jones returns to the festival that premiered her Best Picture Oscar-winning CODA with two new features.
Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields is a documentary that explores the story of the global supermodel and actress who catapulted to popularity at the age of 12. The film is about women and young girls being objectified, sexualized, and commodified.
Judy Blume Forever tells the story of how the American author of young adult fiction came under fire in the 1980s for sexual content and foul language, prompting her to speak out against book banning and censorship.
"Both films reflect the trends we've seen in recent years of biographical work that allows viewers to reopen history and look at it from a different perspective," said Sundance representative John Nein.
Similarly, The Disappearance of Shere Hite follows the trailblazing feminist author of The Hite Report, whose 1976 bestseller about female orgasm triggered a sexual revolution but led her to disappear from public view amid intense criticism.
Little Richard: I Am Everything examines the black queer beginnings of rock 'n' roll through the late singer, who eventually abandoned homosexuality and became a born-again Christian.
Films concerning Iranian women are another popular and current topic on the show. The feature films The Persian Version and Shayda, as well as the documentary Joonam, explore the tales of women in Iran and its diaspora populations at a time when the country is shaken by protests over a severe dress code for women.
The Sundance Film Festival will take place from January 19 to 29, 2023.
