The unjustly neglected beauties of Italy!
Italy is an open-air museum. It is no wonder that as such it is one of the top destinations among world travelers.
Cathedrals, preserved ancient sites, food, drink and fashion are the reasons why hordes of tourists from all over the world besiege this country during all seasons. There are plenty of undiscovered gems that are ripe for exploration, of course, if you know which way to go. Here are some suggestions of unfairly underestimated places in Italy where you will easily get used to dolce vita life.
Polignano a Mare
Tourists have long been lured by Mediterranean mermaids, but the Adriatic, on the east coast of Italy, has its own privilege - Polignano a Mare. This white city with picturesque churches, flowery balconies and dramatic limestone cliffs simply attracts tourists. Spread a towel on the white pebble beach of Cala Porto or explore the azure coves and streets surrounding Polignano a Mare by boat. In the evening, dine in restaurants on the coast and enjoy Italian specialties.
Matera
Although crammed with restaurants, hotels and galleries, Matera is the most important medieval Italian city. Matera gained world fame because of the old town of Sassi di Matera (Stones of Matera). Formerly abandoned houses, and churches carved into the rocks, are now under the protection of UNESCO World Heritage.
Cefalu
One of the undiscovered gems of the Mediterranean and a symbol of medieval magic are the best description of the magical coastal city of Cefalalu in the shadow of a steep mountain. Cefalu has beaches, narrow, medieval streets and beautiful restaurants overlooking the rocky coast. It is located just an hour from Palermo and offers a handful of places for true explorers and history buffs. Here is the cathedral from 1100, as well as the remains of a temple dedicated to the goddess Diana.
Ravelo
Amalfi is a pearl in the crown of the Mediterranean, but only a few kilometers away, there is a hidden Ravello that deserves all the rights to visit it. The medieval city at the top has everything you need - irresistible cafes, terraces with "overflowing" flowers, and five-star hotels - plus an unforgettable view of fishing villages and archetypal cliffs.
