You know him as the owner of a cafe from "Friends," and his struggle is terrible!
- I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to the bones - revealed Gunter from the series "Friends".
Actor from the series "Friends" James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther in the hit series, revealed that he is fighting prostate cancer in the 4th phase.
Namely, the 59-year-old told "NBC's Today" on Monday that he was diagnosed with cancer in 2018, but since then it has spread to other parts of the body, including the bones and spine.
Tyler, who appeared in all 10 seasons of "Friends" as the owner of the cafe "Central Perk", said that aggressive cancer paralyzed his lower body.
"I was diagnosed with prostate cancer that spread to the bones," Tyler said.
"I have been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the last three years ... It is the 4th stage, that is, the late stage of cancer. Well, in the end, you know, it will probably catch up to me"- he said.
Tyler said doctors were optimistic when he was first diagnosed with the disease, but cancer began to "mutate" at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I failed to take the test, which was not good," Tyler said.
"So cancer mutated during the pandemic and that's how it progressed," he said.
The actor is currently undergoing chemotherapy and said that the disease prevented him from appearing in person at the "Friends: The Reunion" recording during which the actors from the famous series gathered together. It was broadcast last month on HBO. Instead, he appeared via the "Zoom" application.
"I wanted to be a part of that and at the beginning, I was supposed to be on the stage, with them, and to participate in all the festivities" - he said.
"It was bitter, honestly. I was very happy to be involved. My decision was not to be a part of it physically and to appear on "Zoom", because I didn't want to lower the atmosphere. I didn't want to be like, "Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer," he said.
Tyler said that many of his former colleagues, as well as the producers of the show, are aware that he is fighting cancer. He said that his cancer was not discovered early, but only during a routine check-up three years ago.
"Many men, if they detect the disease early, can easily cure it," Tyler said.
"I don't want people to have to go through what I went through. This is not an easy process. My goal last year was to see my 59th birthday. I achieved that on May 28th. My goal now is to help save at least one life by talking about this. That is my only reason for going out in public like this, to inform and make people aware. That is my new role"- he concluded.
