4 colors that will enliven your home

The color of the wall can change the tone and mood in different parts of your home and at the same time evoke emotions and memories. If you are thinking of putting your home up for sale, painting the walls can greatly increase its overall value and attract potential buyers - of course, if you choose the right colors.

"A fresh coat of paint brings a 100 percent return on investment and can increase the value of your home by 5 percent,” says Liz Walton, director of a luxury interior design company, Liz Walton Home in Pennsylvania.

It is true that painting a home takes time and money, but you could make significant returns based on the colors you choose. In general, bright and neutral colors are the best option because the choice of color is very subjective.

"So the bolder the color choices you make, the more you run the risk that only a small number of potential buyers will like your home," says David Bluhm, co-founder of Plunk, an app that helps homeowners improve their capital through improvements.

The color you choose for the exterior of your home is also important and plays a role in increasing its value.

From an outside perspective, the color of your home can drastically increase the attractiveness of a property,” says Eamon Lynch, director of a warranty service at Power Home Remodeling. He suggests choosing white, gray, and tan for the exterior of the house as they are ‘the most versatile and timeless in all styles and regions’.

If you want to add a little color to your home, add it on the outside. Lynch suggests choosing doors, window jars for flowers as well as blinds, in a slightly different color to make your home stand out.

Here are the best neutral colors that will elevate your home and increase its value.

1. White

It is excellent for kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, outdoor areas. If you are looking for a color that will beautify your home, make the spaces look and feel bigger and more attractive, you can’t go wrong with white.

- There is only one color that increases - or, better said, does not decrease the value of your home, and that is white - says Anthony Carrino, vice president of design at the digital real estate platform Welcome Homes.

White is a particularly good color for kitchens.

Everyone loves white kitchens,” says Wendy McCleery, senior interior designer at Lars Remodeling and Design. A neutral color like white can allow potential buyers to see themselves in a space - something that a more flashy color could distract from.

- Painting a house in a soft white or neutral color will make your home more ready for the market and it will look bigger and 'cleaner' - says Walton. She recommends using Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace white paint that can be used on walls, ceilings, cabinets, and other spaces.

2. Beige

It is excellent for kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms. A warmer shade of white, tan, or beige is another neutral that can freshen up a space.

- When we paint a property, we like to use bright beige colors on the interior walls - says Marina Vaamonde, an investor in commercial real estate and founder of PropertyCashin. Vaamonde says the beige color gives the room a cozy feel and can increase the perceptual value of the home.

3. Light blue

It is excellent for bathrooms, bedrooms. Research on Zillow in 2021 showed that light blue is the most popular color for painting a bathroom.

- Bathrooms are areas where homeowners want to feel relaxed; any color that helps instantly stimulate that feeling gives increased value, Lynch says. McCleery says light blue can make a bathroom ‘attractive, comfortable and cozy, but also more spacious’.

Once again, light blue is considered a neutral color, which is likely to appeal to a wide range of people with different styles and tastes.

It’s a color that easily enlivens a space and conveys feelings of peace and serenity,” says Kate Diaz, co-owner of the home and interior design website, Swanky Den.

4. Gray

Great for living rooms, bedrooms, outdoor spaces. Both gray and beige are great neutral colors for interiors, but if you can’t decide between the two, gray offers a combination.

The Greige shade of gray can be an alternative to white and plain gray as it brings a sense of elegance and sophistication,” says Warner Quiroga, a real estate investor and owner of Prestige Home Buyers.

Not only will greige give your home a warm look, but it will also increase its value.

Painting a living room or bedroom in a neutral color like gray, beige or light brown can add value to your home, and it can also be modernized with white accessories,” says Bailey Carson, a home decorating expert in Angie.

Walton recommends Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray color as the perfect gray color and adds that this color will make the interior of your home very pleasant.
