"Avatar: The Path of Water" has surpassed $1 billion in revenue!

"Avatar: The Way of Water" exceeded one billion dollars in revenue on the global market in 14 days, and so became the fastest film to cross that amount at the box office this year. With more than $300 million domestically and roughly another $700 million in foreign markets, the long-awaited sequel became the third film of 2022 to earn more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, placing it alongside the hits "Top Gun: Maverick" (which took 31 days to surpass that amount) and "Jurassic World: Dominion" (which took more than four months to reach that mark).

By comparison, nine films released in 2019 exceeded $1 billion in worldwide revenue. "The Way of Water" achieved that goal the fastest after "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in 2021, which took 12 days. Interestingly, only six films in history have earned a billion dollars in their first two weeks of release. But also, that result is far from the result of the original film from 2009, which after repeated screenings came close to earning almost three billion dollars. Although the sequel does not seem to be harmed by the 13-year gap between the films, it will still be difficult to approach the amount of the original, considering that the market has not yet fully recovered from the coronavirus pandemic.
While this current score would also be considered fantastic under any other circumstances, it's still unclear whether the film can reach the estimated breakeven point that James Cameron has revealed it needs to achieve in order to even be profitable. The director of the film stated some time ago that "The Way of Water" should end up as the third or fourth 'biggest' movie of all time, which means that it should make around $2 billion in the global market. And the other planned sequels also depend on the results achieved by "The Way of Water". So if you're a fan, keep your fingers crossed.
