Did you feel sad after watching "Avatar"?
Why did thousands of people feel sad after watching "Avatar"?
The long-awaited sequel to "Avatar: Path of Water", drew thousands of people to theaters to see the film that was 13 years in the making. While director James Cameron hopes the film will be a hit like the first, one thing no one wants is a repeat of what's known as "Post Avatar Depression Syndrome".An unusual phenomenon happened back in 2009 when Avatar fans were introduced to the luxurious and fictional world of Pandora. Thanks to the visual mastery that went into creating the blockbuster hit, viewers are transported to fascinating scenes of a sparkling and stunning planet untouched by human hands.
It was a feast for the eyes of many, but according to a 2010 CNN report, some became depressed after watching the film because they wanted to visit Pandora themselves but then they realized it would never be possible. This was also highlighted on a fan site called Avatar Forums, with a thread titled: "Ways to deal with depression because Pandora is intangible."
This theme garnered more than 1,000 posts and became so popular that site administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread for viewers to discuss depression caused by watching Avatar.
"I wasn't personally depressed. The movie actually made me happy. But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something that we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw that we could live in a completely different world and that caused them depression," Baghdassarian wrote.
The depression after watching Avatar is so strong that some of the viewers said that they even thought about suicide.
"Ever since I saw "Avatar", I was depressed. Seeing the beautiful world of Pandora and the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the movie and all the tears I shed because of it. I even thought about killing myself thinking that if I did that, maybe I'll be reborn in a Pandora" one viewer wrote.
We hope that "Avatar: The Path of Water" will not cause the same problems for viewers.
