Discover the beauty of Ragusa!

It is called one of the most fascinating towns in Sicily and its name is already known on the wish list of many travelers. And yet, it always surprises with its beauty even those who have already had the opportunity to visit it.

Ragusa is an Italian city in Sicily in the municipality of the same name and the province of Ragusa, located on a hill. The inhabitants of Ragusa are mainly engaged in cattle breeding and growing flowers and olives, but lately more and more in tourism. This is completely logical because Ragusa is one of those beautiful cities that will captivate you with its spirit and architecture.

When almost the entire city was destroyed in the earthquake of 1693, the inhabitants did not lose heart. They argued a little about whether to rebuild the city or move out, so they split up: those richer people who could afford it moved to another neighborhood. The rest of the population stayed in the city and helped rebuild. The old part of the city was built in the Baroque spirit, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the new quarter and the renovated city merged into one.

So today within the city there are old and new parts divided by the so-called Valley of the Bridge, and the Baroque center of Ragusa is inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in Europe as an example of the peak of Baroque flourishing in Europe.

Since these are Italians, expect to see numerous churches and sumptuous villas on every corner. Among the most beautiful attractions is the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista located on the two main streets of Ragusa - Via Roma and Corso Italia. It was restored after the great earthquake, and you will easily recognize it by the magnificent dome and the numerous steps leading to it.

Stop by the Hyblean Gardens, the oldest of the city’s four gardens. It was built in 1858 by local nobles, which can be noticed by the magnificent landscape. The avenue of huge palm trees, benches, and impressive sculptures exude the spirit of a rich past, and the archeological site of Ragusa Ibla near the gardens supports this.

Don't get too tired during the day because the best part comes in the evening when the whole city wakes up, the cobbled streets are lit by romantic lighting from the city lanterns and flooded with music from local taverns. Everything is happy until late at night, and it is never too late for another ice cream or a glass of wine.
