Friendship of DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire
They have been friends and supportive since they were little, and they were connected by a difficult childhood. This is a definition of a real friendship.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are proof that there really are real friendships in Hollywood.
There’s not a lot of talk about famous friendships these days, mostly because we don’t know who we can consider for ‘true friends’, especially with scandals and competing for film roles.
However, one of Hollywood’s longest-standing friendships is tied to the stars of The Great Gatsby is between Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. But how did they meet? And are Leo and Tobey still friends today?
Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire met when they were children, at the very beginnings of their acting careers in the 80s.
One day, while Leo and his mother were driving through Los Angeles, he recognized someone from an audition. As Leo said, the fateful meeting began like this:
‘I literally jumped out of the car. I yelled,‘ Tobey! Tobey! Hey! Hey! ' And he said, 'Oh, yes - I know you. You're ... that guy. ' But I just made it my friend. When I want someone to be my friend, I just make him my friend. ' said Leo.
From that moment on, they became almost inseparable - they acted together, hung out and supported each other .Leo and Tobey bonded because of their dysfunctional family life.
Part of what makes this friendship strong is the ability to connect on a personal level. Leo and Tobey were about 12 years old when they met, lived in Los Angeles and they were raised by single mothers.
Tobey’s parents divorced when he was just 3 years old and he was raised among family members. Although he felt loved, Tobey told that he does not like to think about the disturbing moments of his childhood. But he admits there were plenty of them.
It wasn't easy for Leonardo either. His parents divorced when he was one year old and he was primarily raised by his mother. He didn’t grow up in a particularly safe neighborhood, he even revealed he was ‘robbed’ the first time when he was 5 years old.
None of them were formally educated for acting. Leo and Tobey auditioned for the same roles - but there was no bad blood, which means they did not look at each other as a competition. From the beginning, they knew that the acting world was competitive.
In 1990, Tobey and Leo auditioned for the same television adaptation. Leo got the role but asked Tobey to get involved somehow.
Leo also got the lead role in the 1992 film This Boy’s Life alongside Robert De Niro, through his friend. Tobey eventually played Leo’s friend Chuck in the movie, and this role made Leo soar into the stars. He then delighted audiences as Arnie in the film 'What Eats Gilbert Grape?' and the role of Jack in the Titanic.
Tobey appeared constantly on television shows but struggled to find his way. He remained a loyal friend of Leo but eventually stopped auditioning for the same roles. His big breakthrough in acting came finally when he got a role in ‘The Ice Storm’.
They worked on 'Don's Plum' and 'The Great Gatsby' together. Leo may have gotten more roles compared to Tobey, but they were equal to each other on-screen.
It may not be a long list, but when those moments happened, the two of them were more than excited to work with each other.
Tobey and Leo were also members of the band 'Pussy Posse' .
