The film begins in the 18th century when Jeanne is still a young girl living in poverty. She is intelligent and beautiful and she soon realizes that she can use her charm to climb the social ladder. She meets Count du Barry, a rich aristocrat who is enchanted by her beauty. Jeanne and the count become lovers, and he helps her rise above her class.
After becoming rich thanks to her love intrigues, Count du Barry decides to introduce Jeanne to King XV, to Lajous. Jeanne is skeptical at first but soon she falls in love with the king. Their love is passionate, but also forbidden. The king's courtiers are furious that Jeanne, a lower class, has become the king's mistress.
The film "Jeanne du Barry" is a sumptuous and visually attractive production. Maïwenn is a master of costume design and scenography, and the film is full of beautiful scenes and details. The cast is also great. Maïwenn is convincing as Jeanne, and Johnny Depp is charming and charismatic as King XV Lajos.
The film is also a feminist story about a woman who managed to overcome social prejudices and achieve what she wanted. Jeanne is a strong and determined woman who knows what she wants. She is willing to fight for her dreams, even if it means she has to sacrifice her happiness.
The film also has some flaws. The plot is sometimes too predictable, and some characters are underdeveloped. However, "Jeanne du Barry" is ultimately an interesting and entertaining film that offers a new perspective on a familiar history.
Jeanne is forced to wear a mask to protect herself from court intrigues. She is aware that her position is fragile and that she can be overthrown at any moment. Despite this, she decides to fight for her love and her position in court.
