Oscar Pistorius killed his girlfriend Reeve Steenkamp in 2013 and he is still serving a prison sentence. But that could change soon.
South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius killed his then 29-year-old girlfriend in 2013. He justified himself by saying that he was convinced that a burglar had broken into their home in Pretoria. He fired four shots into the bathroom door and killed Reeve Steenkamp.
Winner of three gold medals in running at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, was sentenced in 2015 to 13 years and five months in prison.

'I killed Reeva and I have to live with it. I can still smell her blood. I can still feel the heat in my hands. I understand the pain felt by all those who loved her and now miss her. I feel the same pain. And I hate myself. I think about what happened and I ask myself: 'How is it possible that something like that could happen?',' said the former Paralympian in an interview. He then revealed his version of events, which the court later dismissed as false. He said he woke up at three in the morning after hearing an open window in the bathroom.
During the trial, witnesses revealed that the athlete was often violent towards Reeva during their long relationship. He cried in court and looked broken, and once he came with wrist injuries, so it was interpreted as if he wanted to hurt himself in prison. However, those who know him well said that it was all just a show for the public. He was originally sentenced to five years for negligent murder, but the prosecution appealed.
By the way, before he was convicted of killing his girlfriend, he aroused admiration for the sporting successes he achieved by running with prostheses. Namely, due to a congenital defect, both of his legs were amputated below the knee before his first birthday. The Oscar was also nicknamed Blade Runner.
Now Oscar is one step closer to getting out of jail after securing a meeting with the victim’s father. He will soon be talking to Barry Steenkamp, the girl’s father and June’s mother who already said she forgave him. The meeting is part of a 'legal' rehabilitation that could lead to Oscar's early release from prison, but it is still unclear when they will meet.
'He wants to tell them he is sorry,' said a friend of the killer. The prosecutor said in 2014 that the former runner offered $ 34,000 to Steenkamp's family after he killed her, but they refused because they did not want to accept "bloody money".
