Tantric sex: Great tips for beginners
Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be super flexible, religious, or spiritual to enjoy tantric sex.
You may have heard that tantric sex serves as a synonym for the most intimate sexual experience in life. We are talking about full-body orgasms and euphoric feelings that almost reach the spiritual level. But tantric sex can often be misunderstood.
Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be super flexible, religious, or spiritual to enjoy it. All you need is an open mind and a partner for this kind of new experience. Before we get into what tantric sex is and how to practice it, let's start with the basics.
Compared to the ancient tantric traditions, which span thousands of years, Western understandings and teachings of tantra have a much shorter history and what we might label as "neotantra". It is a modern approach to tantra that focuses on healing traumatic blocks, connecting deeply with one's body and emotions, and working with sexual energies.
What exactly is tantric sex?
'Tantric sex is essentially a slow, meditative sexual practice', says Kamil Lewis, a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in sex and relationships. 'There is no other goal than to be present and connected to each other', says Devi Ward Erickson, founder of the Institute for Authentic Tantra Education.

Steps to practice tantric sex:
1. Romantic atmosphere
The secret of tantric sexual experience is the strengthening of all senses. A wonderful way to create a nurturing environment is to enhance each sense by dimming the lights, lighting candles, and playing music. Just make sure the music is not too distracting because the goal is to create a "sensual cocoon". To really tune in to your senses, you might ask yourself: How does it feel to be in this moment? What does the room I'm in smell like? This is also the perfect time to wear that set of underwear you've been saving for a special occasion.
2. Meditation
Tantric sex involves total presence throughout sex, so practicing meditation before intercourse can be a great way to relax your mind and body. Use a mobile meditation app or look them up on YouTube if you're new to it and need some guidance.
3. Bath
Another great tip for getting into a calm zone before practicing tantric sex is a ritual bath. Taking time to be with yourself can enhance your experience, whether you're engaging in partnered or solo sex.
4. Coordinated breathing
Breathing alone during solo meditation can do wonders, but take it a step further by practicing harmonized breathing, which involves synchronizing your breath with your partner's. "If you're tired from a day at work, stressed or anxious, just sit down and turn to your partner, listen to their breath because it's a really great way to connect," says Lewis.
5. Eye contact
Not only is prolonged eye contact during sex super sexy, but it's also a great way to feel connected to your partner. "When we make direct, prolonged eye contact, it tells your autonomic nervous system to relax and be present," explains Erickson.
